Wild Withing Acres

Community Garden FAQ

When do Community Garden days occur?

Every Saturday from 1:00-6:00 pm (weather permitting: we won’t garden in thunderstorms or pouring rain!)

Starting May 13, 2023 through at least the first frost date (October 23).

As extenuating circumstances do sometimes arise, it is possible that occasional cancellations will occur: these will be announced on our Instagram and through our email list. If you aren’t already signed up for our email list, click here!

do I need to stay the whole time?

Nope! You can come and go as you see fit.

Do I need to commit to being there at any specific frequency or regularity?

Nope again! You are certainly welcome to come every week to tend to your plant babies and walk around in the woods. You can talk with Lore about a good location to plant things you are most interested in growing, and care for it as your own little community garden plot!

But you don’t need to! There are always plenty of things to do around the Wild Within Acres. If you are a beginning gardener and have lots of questions, we’re always happy to help… and there may be other folks here with even more wisdom and knowledge! And yes: Lore will be visiting the garden daily, and will tend to things when they notice them. :-)

Come as often or as rarely as you are able.

What accessibility limitations are there?

We undeniably have some accessibility limitations at this time.

The ground is bumpy, which is challenging for many wheelchair users; on the other hand, unless it is very wet, it is hard enough to be easier going than sand or gravel would be! We do not currently have wood or paved trails.

Although we hope to acquire and/or build some, we do not yet have any raised beds: the garden is all at ground level.

We are working on putting together an accessible outhouse arrangement. In the meantime, facilities are limited to The Great Outdoors (with an outdoor sink available!) and one within our home, which involves four steps up to access. All doors and hallways are wider than required by ADA standards.

We know that accessibility needs are as diverse as the people who have them, and that we cannot possibly think of everything here. If you have concerns related to accessibility, please send us an email and we will be happy to answer any and all questions and work towards finding solutions to our accessibility gaps!

Are there any rules?

Although not many, we do have some.

Although we are not a certified organic farm, we do use organic methods and strive to minimize inputs into the soil. Please ask before adding anything to the soil (other than seeds and love!).

In our efforts to tend to the local ecosystem as a whole, please do not plant or otherwise introduce any species listed as invasive by the New York State Department of Conservation or the Cornell Cooperative Extension.

We support the legalization and decriminalization of cannabis that has taken place in New York State, and we are a cannabis-friendly space for consensual adult consumption of cannabis. However, due to restrictions and limitations that New York State has placed upon the cultivation of cannabis plants, we are unfortunately not able to honor requests of community members who would like to grow their own cannabis plants here.

We are who we are: queer, trans, neurodivergent leftists who continuously aspire to more fully embody anti-racist action and decolonization of our minds and lives. We do not abide hate speech, bigotry, racism, cissexism, ableism, classism, sizeism, or any other forms of xenophobia.

As this takes place at our home, we request a chance to talk with anyone who we don’t already know prior to giving the address. This is not only for our own edification, but in the interests of keeping this space safe and affirming for all those within our community.

We honor and respect people’s correct pronouns (i.e., the ones that they tell you to use for them), bodily autonomy, and right to self advocacy. If you can’t do the same, you aren’t welcome.

So how much does it cost to take part?

We truly believe that all people have the right to food, and to knowledge relating to how to grow food. As such, there is no charge to come and participate in the garden.

But… what if I really want to support this project?

There are definitely options, whether you are a gardener here or someone who lives in another area who wants to support our work from afar.

You are always to make a one time donation by clicking HERE  or a monthly reoccurring donation HERE

We also have an ever-evolving wish list, which you can access by clicking HERE

And for those who are local: we are always accepting donations of tools, wood pallets, bricks, and cinder blocks!
