Upcoming Community Event: Wri(gh)ting Worlds Creative Workshop Series

“It is the job of the artist to make revolution irresistible”- Toni Cade Bambara

I am so incredibly excited to elevate an upcoming creative workshop series!

The Wri(gh)ting Worlds workshop series will be facilitated by our friend and comrade Sabine Bradley (she/they), and the first session will be centered on a short story by no other than Octavia Butler, so you all know I couldn’t sign up fast enough!

Here is some information on the workshop in their own words:

What does it mean to be an artist in a world that finds itself yet again on the verge of great change? How can our stories help us map our collective future?

The Wri(gh)ting Worlds workshop series seeks to start answering these questions, as well as uncover new ones. We’ll explore elements of visionary fiction, the history and ongoing legacy of fictional stories as resistance, solarpunk, and—of course—community.

Session one is all about on the responsibility of creation with a close look at Octavia Butler’s “The Book of Martha.”

All workshop sessions cost a sliding scale price of $10-$25, with no one turned away for lack of funds!

(Note: “The Book of Martha” appears in Bloodchild and Other Stories, and can be accessed online on the Seven Stories Press website.)

Each of these sessions is a standalone workshop; in other words, you don’t need to attend all of them, and folks who cannot attend the in-person workshop are still warmly welcomed to attend the Zoom sessions!

Here is a quick outline of the series:

  • Session 1: IN-PERSON (Rochester, NY: location TBA), January 7, 2024, 5-7 pm EST.

    • “Beyond ‘The Book of Martha’: Exploring the Nexus of Imagination and Responsibility.”

  • Session 2: VIA ZOOM, February 25, 2024, 5-7 pm EST.

    • “Visionary Fables, Ancient Futures: A Look at BIPOC Futurism and the Quantum Value of Stories.”

  • Session 3: VIA ZOOM, March 24, 2024, 5-7 pm EST.

    • “New Faced: Characterization Amidst Strange Worlds.”

You can register for Session 1 at this link or by emailing Sabine at sabrinaalexxis6.5 [at] gmail [dot] com.

Donations to support Sabine’s work and to help cover the cost for individuals who otherwise could not afford to attend can be made via Venmo directly to Sabine at @bradley-sabine.

Registration will be up and running for Sessions 2 and 3 soon.

I’m so excited to dive into emergent futures with some awesome writers and creators!

This is not a Wild Within Acres event: this is 100% the inspiration, work, and creation of Sabine!
